Cooling Technology Institute’s Annual Conference in New Orleans

At this CTI Annual Conference show I was there alone, but got to spend time with one of my Customers Tony Balliagues, a Canadian, that I ran into there. On this trip I realized how much I love the combined art and music you find in Orleans. And of course, the food is really good too; there is just no other place quite like it in the US.

26 technical papers were presented, along with sessions put on by the Water Treating Group (WT), the Performance and Technology Group (P&T) and the Engineering Standards and Maintenance Group (ES&M) of CTI. There was also a Water Treating Panel Discussion on Instrumentation and Control in Cooling Water Systems. Hey, that’s us!
The conference was billed to “consist of the industry’s top vendors”.
We enjoyed meeting several OEMs and are excited about working with them in the future. We got a great reception and will be working furiously to get back to all of those that requested more information or quotes. We hope to welcome many of you to our family soon. Thanks!

AHR Expo in Chicago

The American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) “AHR Expo” in Chicago this year turned out to be a record breaker for attendance. Over 62,000 visitors from over 140 were in attendance for the 2015 Annual Meeting, according to ASHAE. A consolidation between ASHRAE and the Indoor Air Quality Association was also finalized by both organizations at the conference.
We had a great time – a special thanks goes out to all of the great people we talked with. Many were genuinely interested in how our water level controllers could upgrade and modernize their systems, and we had many conversations with both contactors and OEMs, several of whom we are already talking with further.
AHR Expo in Chicago It was a pretty cold visit to Chicago this year, but we had a good time there. We did get a bit tired walking around the conference and one day even braved the cold on foot back to the hotel, but a cab was the proper way to travel in that weather. At nights we were on a quest to find the best Italian food and even had several different kinds of pizza at three different restaurants. Our favorite food on this visit turned out to be at a place called Tuscany.
Next we are off to the Cooling Technology Institute’s Annual Conference in New Orleans, where we hope to see many old and, hopefully, some new, friends.

Lift Stations

Lift Stations Explained

A lift station is a system that moves any sort of clear water or wastewater from a lower elevation to a higher elevation. It begins as a wet well – a large underground pit that gravity pipelines feed into. When there is a determined amount of water or sewage in the wet well, an electronic or float switch will activate a centrifugal pump that sends the contents elsewhere. In sewage situations, the lift station will carry sewage to a treatment center.

It’s often found that wet wells contain multiple pumps in order to handle various flows throughout the day. Secondary underground rooms where technicians can safely enter and service pumps and monitoring systems are known as dry wells, and are typically found near the wet well. If a level switch or pump were to fail for whatever reason, the contents can overflow. Regardless of clearwater or wastewater, this often results in property damage and/or physical injury.

Waterline Controls offers the WLC7000-9100 series for accurate and reliable level control. The WLC sensor is made of stainless steel probes that are low voltage and low current, and will not plate, foul, or degrade in clearwater or wastewater. The functions offered include pump on and off for two different pumps, a high alarm, and power loss indication. They can alternate between two pumps to ensure that both pumps are used equally, and a visible/audible alarm is optional. Waterline Controls Acquires Trademark

After six years of waiting, Waterline Controls has finally received its trademark. When System Dynamics, Inc was developing Waterline Controls back in October of 2008, President Bill Seneff applied for a trademark of the name “Waterline Controls” to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). After almost ten months of processing, the trademark request was denied. During five years of growing Waterline Controls business into the product line it is today, Bill Seneff had the Waterline Controls’ logo created and developed the WLC Level Controllers into a popular and recognizable brand. In August of 2013, both Waterline Controls’ name and logo were resubmitted for review by USPTO. There was no opposition, and the trademarks were officially registered on August 19th, 2014. You can find both the logo and the name trademarked at www.uspto.gov under their registration numbers 4587419 and 4587400 respectively.

New Catalog Release!

Due to an interest in physical literature from both new and existing customers across the country, Waterline Controls shows its dedication to clientele by developing a new product catalog. This blue booklet contains product information for all applications, including cooling towers, well water holding tanks, boilers, fire protection, sumps, commercial pools and fountains, sewage, and wastewater treatment.
Inside each catalog you will find high-resolution prints of the information sheets we provide online. These information sheets offer the product’s description, functions, design, and drawings. Included with the catalog is a flash drive that has .pdf versions of the printed documents, as well as AutoCAD drawings for each of our products. This is the first release of the DWG files.

California Cooling Towers Now Need Overflow Alarms

On July 1st, 2014, California Building Energy Efficiency Standard’s most recent revision went into effect. One of the adjustments from the 2008 standard that was implemented was “increasing cooling tower energy efficiency and water Savings” (Section 140.4.(k)2). The updates to Title 24, Part 6 aim to improve water use and conservation in large cooling towers. According to Section 110.2(e), “Open and closed circuit cooling tower installations must … Be equipped with an overflow alarm to prevent overflow of the sump in case of makeup water valve failure. Overflow alarm shall send an audible signal or provide an alert via the energy management control system to the tower operator in case of sump overflow” (California Energy Code, p. 28). This standard is now mandatory on cooling towers 150 tons or greater.

The Waterline Controls WLC series is a perfect solution for an overflow alarm. The WLC5000 and WLC6000 both include not only a high alarm, but a low alarm as well. The units have dry contacts that connect directly to the Building Management System, as well as LED indicator lights on the controller itself and optional audible alarms. What’s more, they also function as an automated water level system that is much more reliable than any mechanical float switch. All units have an Expected Useful Life (EUL) of 15 years backed by a 5 Year Limited Warranty, matching the analysis life cycle proposed during the 2013 Standard prerulemaking (Codes and Standards Enhancement Initiative, sec 2.7.6-2.11). WLC4000, 5000, and 6000 series currently in the field meet these requirements, and no updates or upgrades are necessary.

California’s Energy Commission website states “ [Our] energy efficiency standards have saved Californians more than $74 billion in reduced electricity bills since 1977”.
